Employee Business Expense Deduction Reinstatement Act of 2022
12/29/2022, 12:33 PM
Summary of Bill HR 8848
Bill 117 HR 8848, also known as the Employee Business Expense Deduction Reinstatement Act of 2022, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to reinstate the deduction for certain unreimbursed employee business expenses that was eliminated by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.
If passed, this bill would allow employees to deduct expenses related to their job that are not reimbursed by their employer. This could include things like travel expenses, uniforms, tools, and other necessary items for work. The deduction would be available to both employees who itemize their deductions and those who take the standard deduction.
Supporters of the bill argue that reinstating this deduction would help to alleviate the financial burden on employees who incur expenses for their job. They believe that it is unfair to require employees to cover these costs out of pocket without any tax relief. Opponents of the bill, however, argue that reinstating this deduction could lead to abuse and fraud, as it may be difficult to verify the legitimacy of some expenses claimed by employees. They also argue that the deduction primarily benefits higher-income individuals who are more likely to itemize their deductions. Overall, the Employee Business Expense Deduction Reinstatement Act of 2022 is a controversial piece of legislation that seeks to provide tax relief to employees who incur job-related expenses. Its fate in Congress remains uncertain as lawmakers continue to debate its merits and drawbacks.
