Salary Transparency Act
12/30/2022, 4:33 AM
Summary of Bill HR 6850
The Salary Transparency Act, also known as Bill 117 hr 6850, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The main goal of this bill is to promote transparency in the workplace by requiring employers to disclose salary information to their employees.
Under the provisions of the Salary Transparency Act, employers would be required to provide employees with information about the salary range for their position, as well as the median salary for that position within the company. This information would need to be provided to employees upon hiring, and then updated annually.
The bill also includes provisions to protect employees from retaliation for discussing their salaries with coworkers. Employers would be prohibited from taking any adverse action against employees who discuss their salaries, and employees would have the right to file a complaint with the Department of Labor if they believe they have been retaliated against. Supporters of the Salary Transparency Act argue that increased transparency around salaries can help to close the gender pay gap and promote fair compensation practices. They believe that when employees have access to information about salary ranges and median salaries within their company, they are better equipped to negotiate for fair pay. Opponents of the bill argue that it could create unnecessary administrative burdens for employers and potentially lead to conflicts among employees. They also express concerns about the potential for employees to misuse salary information to create discord within the workplace. Overall, the Salary Transparency Act aims to promote fairness and equality in the workplace by increasing transparency around salaries. It remains to be seen whether this bill will gain enough support to become law.
