Summary of Bill HR 2147
Bill 115 hr 2147, also known as the Veterans Treatment Court Improvement Act of 2018, aims to improve the effectiveness of Veterans Treatment Courts (VTCs) in providing support and rehabilitation for veterans involved in the criminal justice system.
The bill recognizes the unique challenges faced by veterans, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), and seeks to ensure that VTCs are equipped to address these issues. It requires the Department of Justice to provide grants to VTCs to enhance their capacity to provide mental health and substance abuse treatment, as well as other services tailored to the needs of veterans.
Additionally, the bill mandates the establishment of a program to provide training and technical assistance to VTCs, in order to ensure that they are operating in accordance with best practices and are able to effectively serve veterans in their communities. It also requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to collaborate with VTCs to provide access to VA benefits and services for veterans participating in the program. Overall, the Veterans Treatment Court Improvement Act of 2018 seeks to strengthen and expand the reach of VTCs, in order to better support veterans who have encountered legal issues as a result of their service to our country.
