Summary of Bill HR 3233

Bill 117 HR 3233, also known as the National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act, is a proposed legislation that aims to establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the events surrounding the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol.

The bill was introduced in response to the violent insurrection that took place on January 6, 2021, when a mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The attack resulted in multiple deaths, injuries, and significant damage to the Capitol complex.

The proposed commission would be composed of 10 members, with an equal number of Democrats and Republicans appointed by congressional leaders. The commission would be tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the events leading up to and during the attack, including any factors that may have contributed to the violence. The commission would have the authority to issue subpoenas, hold hearings, and gather evidence in order to provide a comprehensive report on its findings and recommendations. The goal of the commission is to ensure accountability for those responsible for the attack and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The bill has received bipartisan support in Congress, with lawmakers from both parties recognizing the importance of a thorough investigation into the events of January 6. However, the bill has also faced opposition from some Republicans who argue that the commission could be politically motivated. Overall, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act represents a significant effort to uncover the truth behind the events of January 6 and to uphold the principles of democracy and rule of law in the United States.
