Scientific Integrity Act

This bill revises provisions regarding the release of scientific research results by federal agencies.

Each agency that funds, conducts, or oversees scientific research must (1) adopt and enforce a scientific integrity policy that includes certain requirements, such as restricting scientific conclusions from being based on political considerations; and (2) submit such policy to the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) for approval. Agencies must make their policies public, submit them to Congress, and periodically update them with OSTP's approval. The Government Accountability Office shall review implementation of the policies.

Each agency shall (1) appoint a Scientific Integrity Officer, (2) establish a process for dispute resolution consistent with the scientific integrity policy, and (3) establish a specified training program for current and new employees.

The Scientific Integrity Act, also known as Bill 118 hr 4893, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress aimed at promoting transparency and integrity in scientific research conducted or funded by federal agencies. The bill seeks to ensure that scientific data and findings are not manipulated or suppressed for political reasons.

Key provisions of the Scientific Integrity Act include:

1. Establishing clear guidelines for federal agencies to prevent political interference in scientific research. 2. Requiring agencies to develop and implement scientific integrity policies that protect the independence and objectivity of researchers. 3. Prohibiting the alteration or suppression of scientific findings for non-scientific reasons. 4. Providing protections for federal scientists who report violations of scientific integrity. The bill is supported by a bipartisan group of lawmakers who believe that maintaining the integrity of scientific research is crucial for evidence-based policymaking and public trust in government institutions. Critics of the bill argue that it could hinder agencies' ability to effectively communicate scientific information to the public. Overall, the Scientific Integrity Act aims to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability in federal scientific research, ensuring that decisions are based on sound evidence rather than political considerations.
