Contact Lens Prescription Verification Modernization Act

This bill revises the requirements for the verification of prescriptions related to the purchase of contact lenses. Specifically, online sellers of prescription contact lenses must provide consumers with a method to transmit a digital copy of their prescriptions to such sellers. Online sellers also must encrypt protected health information they send by email.

Additionally, the bill prohibits any seller of prescription contact lenses from using telephone calls with an artificial or prerecorded voice (i.e., robocalls) to verify a consumer's prescription.

Bill 118 hr 2748, also known as the Contact Lens Prescription Verification Modernization Act, aims to modernize the process of verifying contact lens prescriptions in the United States. The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives on May 4, 2021, by Representative Bobby Rush from Illinois.

The main goal of the bill is to improve access to contact lenses for consumers by streamlining the verification process. Currently, when a consumer wants to purchase contact lenses, their prescription must be verified by their eye care provider before the lenses can be dispensed. This verification process can sometimes be time-consuming and cumbersome, leading to delays in obtaining contact lenses.

The Contact Lens Prescription Verification Modernization Act seeks to address this issue by allowing consumers to bypass the verification process if their prescription has not changed in the past year and they provide a signed statement confirming this. This would make it easier for consumers to quickly and conveniently purchase contact lenses without unnecessary delays. Additionally, the bill includes provisions to ensure that eye care providers are still able to verify prescriptions when necessary to protect the health and safety of consumers. It also includes measures to prevent the sale of counterfeit or expired contact lenses, further safeguarding consumers. Overall, the Contact Lens Prescription Verification Modernization Act aims to make the process of obtaining contact lenses more efficient and convenient for consumers while still maintaining important safeguards to protect their health and safety.
