PRENDA Act of 2022

12/30/2022, 3:49 AM

Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act of 2022 or the PRENDA Act of 2022

This bill creates new federal crimes related to the performance of sex-selection abortions (i.e., abortions based on the sex or gender of an unborn child).

It subjects a violator to criminal penalties—a fine, a prison term of up to five years, or both.

It also authorizes civil remedies, including damages and injunctive relief.

A woman who undergoes a sex-selection abortion may not be prosecuted or held civilly liable.

Bill 117 HR 6465, also known as the PRENDA Act of 2022, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to prohibit discrimination against unborn children on the basis of sex or race.

The bill seeks to address the issue of sex-selective and race-selective abortions, which are believed to be occurring in the United States. Supporters of the bill argue that these types of abortions are discriminatory and violate the rights of unborn children.

If passed, the PRENDA Act of 2022 would make it illegal for a healthcare provider to perform an abortion if the provider knows that the abortion is being sought on the basis of the unborn child's sex or race. The bill also includes provisions for penalties for healthcare providers who violate this law. Opponents of the bill argue that it interferes with a woman's right to choose and could lead to further restrictions on abortion access. They also question the necessity of the bill, as there is limited evidence to suggest that sex-selective and race-selective abortions are widespread in the United States. Overall, the PRENDA Act of 2022 is a controversial piece of legislation that addresses the sensitive issue of discrimination in abortion practices. It has sparked debate among lawmakers and advocates on both sides of the abortion rights issue.
