Tribal Biochar Promotion Act of 2021

This bill establishes biochar demonstration projects. Biochar refers to carbonized biomass produced by converting feedstock through reductive thermal processing for nonfuel uses.

Specifically, the bill directs the Department of the Interior (for land under Bureau of Land Management jurisdiction) and the Department of Agriculture (for land under Forest Service jurisdiction) to enter into agreements with tribes or tribal organizations to carry out biochar demonstration projects. These projects must support the development and commercialization of biochar on Indian forest land or rangeland and in nearby communities by providing them with reliable supplies of feedstock from federal lands.

Bill 117 hr 4504, also known as the Tribal Biochar Promotion Act of 2021, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to promote the use of biochar, a type of charcoal produced from organic materials, within tribal communities.

The bill aims to support tribal governments in developing and implementing biochar projects that can help improve soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainable land management practices. It also seeks to provide technical assistance and funding to tribes interested in utilizing biochar as a tool for environmental conservation and economic development.

Additionally, the Tribal Biochar Promotion Act of 2021 includes provisions for research and education initiatives to increase awareness and understanding of biochar within tribal communities. This bill highlights the importance of incorporating traditional ecological knowledge and practices into biochar projects to ensure cultural sensitivity and respect for indigenous perspectives. Overall, the Tribal Biochar Promotion Act of 2021 represents a bipartisan effort to support tribal sovereignty, environmental stewardship, and economic empowerment through the promotion of biochar technology. It underscores the potential for biochar to serve as a valuable tool for addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development in tribal communities across the United States.
