Greenhouse gas Reduction and Environmental Enhancement through New Ferries Act or the GREEN Ferries Act

This bill makes projects to construct or otherwise acquire zero- or reduced-emissions passenger ferries (and related facilities and equipment) eligible for grants that support transit capital, operating assistance, and transportation planning in urbanized areas.

The GREEN Ferries Act, also known as Bill 117 hr 3516, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress with the goal of promoting the use of environmentally friendly technologies in the ferry industry. The bill aims to reduce emissions and improve air quality by providing funding for the construction and operation of ferries that utilize clean energy sources such as electric or hydrogen fuel cells.

Specifically, the GREEN Ferries Act would establish a grant program to assist ferry operators in transitioning to cleaner technologies. This program would provide financial support for the purchase of low or zero-emission ferries, as well as the necessary infrastructure to support these vessels. Additionally, the bill includes provisions for research and development of new technologies to further reduce emissions in the ferry industry.

The GREEN Ferries Act has received bipartisan support in Congress, with lawmakers from both parties recognizing the importance of reducing pollution and protecting the environment. Proponents of the bill argue that investing in clean ferry technology will not only benefit the environment, but also create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the maritime industry. Overall, the GREEN Ferries Act represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation sector. If passed, this legislation has the potential to make a positive impact on air quality and public health, while also supporting innovation and economic development in the ferry industry.
