Coretta Scott King Mid-Decade Redistricting Prohibition Act of 2021

This bill prohibits a state where the congressional districts have been redistricted after a decennial census from carrying out another redistricting until after the next apportionment of Representatives following a decennial census, unless a court requires the state to conduct a subsequent redistricting to comply with the Constitution or enforce the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The bill is applicable to any congressional redistricting which occurs after the regular decennial census conducted during 2020.

Bill 117 HR 134, also known as the Coretta Scott King Mid-Decade Redistricting Prohibition Act of 2021, aims to prohibit states from conducting mid-decade redistricting. This means that states would not be allowed to redraw their congressional districts outside of the normal redistricting process that occurs every ten years following the census.

The bill is named after Coretta Scott King, the wife of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., in honor of her dedication to fighting for equal representation and voting rights. The purpose of the bill is to prevent political parties from manipulating district boundaries for their own advantage, a practice known as gerrymandering.

If passed, the Coretta Scott King Mid-Decade Redistricting Prohibition Act of 2021 would help ensure fair and equal representation for all citizens by maintaining the integrity of the redistricting process. This bill is an important step towards promoting democracy and preventing partisan manipulation of electoral districts.
