Summary of Bill S 1823

The Bill 118 s 1823, also known as the BAH Restoration Act, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to restore Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates for military service members to the levels that were in place before the 2017 changes made by the Department of Defense.

The BAH is a monthly allowance provided to service members to help cover the cost of housing when they are not living in government-provided housing. In 2017, the Department of Defense implemented changes to the BAH calculation method, which resulted in lower rates for many service members. This has caused financial hardship for some military families, particularly those living in high-cost areas.

The BAH Restoration Act seeks to address this issue by reverting the BAH rates back to their pre-2017 levels. This would ensure that service members receive the appropriate amount of financial support to cover their housing expenses. The bill has received bipartisan support in Congress, with lawmakers recognizing the importance of supporting our military personnel and their families. Overall, the BAH Restoration Act aims to provide much-needed relief to service members who have been negatively impacted by the changes to the BAH rates. By restoring the previous levels of BAH, this legislation seeks to ensure that our military personnel are able to afford suitable housing for themselves and their families.
