GAO Inspector General Parity Act

This bill makes changes to provisions relating to the Inspector General (IG) of the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

Specifically, if the IG is removed from office or transferred to another position or location within GAO, GAO must communicate in writing the substantive rationale, including detailed and case-specific reasons, for any such removal or transfer to both chambers of Congress not later than 30 days before the removal or transfer.

Only the Comptroller General may place the IG on non-duty status, subject to specified requirements.

The bill modifies the IG's rate of pay to make it comparable to other senior-level GAO employee rates of pay.

GAO must include the annual budget request of the IG in the GAO budget without change.

The IG shall obtain legal advice from a counsel reporting directly to the IG or another IG.

Bill 118 s 1510, also known as the GAO Inspector General Parity Act, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The bill aims to ensure that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) Inspector General has the same level of independence and authority as other federal agency inspectors general.

The GAO Inspector General is responsible for overseeing the operations of the GAO and ensuring that it is operating efficiently and effectively. However, currently, the GAO Inspector General does not have the same level of independence and authority as other federal agency inspectors general. This bill seeks to rectify that by granting the GAO Inspector General the same powers and responsibilities as other inspectors general.

If passed, the GAO Inspector General Parity Act would strengthen the oversight of the GAO and help ensure that it is held accountable for its actions. This bill has received bipartisan support in Congress, with lawmakers from both parties recognizing the importance of ensuring that the GAO Inspector General has the necessary tools to effectively carry out their duties. Overall, the GAO Inspector General Parity Act is an important piece of legislation that aims to improve accountability and transparency within the GAO. It is currently being debated in Congress, and its passage would be a significant step towards ensuring that the GAO operates in a fair and impartial manner.
