DOD may share data with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase the knowledge and understanding of cancer occurrences among firefighters.

Bill 118 s 2665, also known as the Federal Firefighter Cancer Detection and Prevention Act of 2023, aims to address the increased risk of cancer among firefighters by providing funding for cancer detection and prevention programs. The bill recognizes that firefighters are exposed to a variety of carcinogens in the line of duty, putting them at a higher risk for developing cancer.

The key provisions of the bill include:

1. Establishing a grant program to fund cancer screenings and prevention programs for firefighters. This will help ensure that firefighters have access to regular screenings and preventive measures to detect cancer at an early stage. 2. Requiring the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to develop guidelines for reducing firefighters' exposure to carcinogens. This will help protect firefighters from harmful substances that can increase their risk of developing cancer. 3. Providing funding for research on the link between firefighting and cancer. This will help improve our understanding of the factors that contribute to cancer among firefighters and inform future prevention efforts. Overall, the Federal Firefighter Cancer Detection and Prevention Act of 2023 aims to support the health and well-being of firefighters by addressing the increased risk of cancer in this profession. By providing funding for prevention programs, research, and guidelines for reducing exposure to carcinogens, the bill seeks to improve the health outcomes of firefighters across the country.
