Research Security and Accountability in DHS Act

This bill requires the Science and Technology Directorate in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a DHS policy for safeguarding research and development from unauthorized access or disclosures of sensitive information in related acquisitions.

Additionally, the Government Accountability Office must report on the compliance of DHS with a 2021 presidential memorandum and related guidance that required certain disclosures about government-funded research and development (e.g., conflicts of interest involving foreign governments).

Bill 118 hr 9748, also known as the Research Security and Accountability in DHS Act, aims to enhance the security and accountability measures within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) related to research activities. The bill focuses on ensuring that research conducted by DHS is done in a secure and responsible manner, with proper oversight and safeguards in place.

One key aspect of the bill is the establishment of a Research Security and Accountability Office within DHS, which will be responsible for overseeing all research activities and ensuring compliance with security protocols. This office will also be tasked with developing and implementing policies to protect sensitive information and prevent unauthorized access to research data.

Additionally, the bill requires DHS to conduct regular audits and assessments of its research programs to identify any potential security vulnerabilities or weaknesses. It also mandates that DHS collaborate with other federal agencies and research institutions to share best practices and coordinate efforts to enhance research security across the board. Overall, the Research Security and Accountability in DHS Act seeks to strengthen the security and integrity of research activities within DHS, ensuring that valuable research is conducted in a responsible and secure manner. By implementing these measures, the bill aims to protect sensitive information, prevent unauthorized access, and promote accountability within the department's research programs.
