Veterans Expedited TSA Screening Safe Travel Act or the VETS Safe Travel Act

This bill makes certain veterans eligible for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck Program at no cost if they meet the program's background check and security requirements.

Veterans who are eligible for this fee waiver are those who are in the patient enrollment system of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and require the use of a wheelchair, prosthetic limb, or other assistive device to aid with mobility due to (1) loss, or loss of use, of a limb; (2) full or partial paralyzation; or (3) permanent blindness.

The VA and the TSA must develop and implement a process under which eligible veterans may receive the PreCheck Program benefit.

Further, the VA and the TSA must develop and implement a process to provide disabled veterans with effective outreach about TSA programs that are designed to improve the screening process for passengers with disabilities.

The VETS Safe Travel Act, also known as Bill 118 hr 7365, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to improve the safety and accessibility of travel for veterans by requiring the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to develop and implement a training program for its employees on how to effectively screen and assist veterans with disabilities.

Specifically, the VETS Safe Travel Act mandates that the TSA create a training program that includes information on how to identify and assist veterans with disabilities, including those with physical or mental health conditions. This training program would also cover best practices for communicating with veterans and providing them with the support they need to navigate the airport security process.

Additionally, the bill requires the TSA to establish a process for veterans to self-identify as such when booking flights or going through security screening. This would allow TSA employees to better assist veterans and ensure that they receive the accommodations they require. Overall, the VETS Safe Travel Act aims to make travel safer and more accessible for veterans, particularly those with disabilities. By providing TSA employees with the necessary training and resources, this bill seeks to improve the overall travel experience for veterans and ensure that they are able to navigate the airport security process with ease.
