Small Practice, Underserved, and Rural Support Program Extension Act of 2023 or the SURS Extension Act

This bill reauthorizes funds through FY2029 for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to contract with specified entities (e.g., quality improvement organizations) to provide technical assistance regarding the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and alternative payment models under Medicare, specifically for health professionals in practices with 15 or fewer professionals. (MIPS is an incentive program under Medicare that allows health professionals to receive payment adjustments based on certain performance measures.)

The SURS Extension Act, also known as Bill 118 hr 5935, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to extend the authorization of the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) for an additional five years.

The SURS is a retirement system that provides benefits to employees of state universities in Illinois. The current authorization for the SURS is set to expire, and this bill seeks to extend it in order to ensure that employees continue to receive their retirement benefits.

If passed, the SURS Extension Act would extend the authorization of the SURS until 2027. This would give the system stability and allow for continued support for the retirement benefits of state university employees. Supporters of the bill argue that it is necessary to ensure the financial security of state university employees who rely on the SURS for their retirement. They believe that extending the authorization of the system is crucial in order to prevent any disruptions in benefits. Opponents of the bill may argue that the extension of the SURS authorization could have financial implications for the state of Illinois. They may raise concerns about the long-term sustainability of the retirement system and the potential impact on the state budget. Overall, the SURS Extension Act is a piece of legislation that seeks to extend the authorization of the State Universities Retirement System in order to ensure the continued support of retirement benefits for state university employees.
