Excess Urban Heat Mitigation Act of 2022

This bill requires the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to establish a grant program for state, tribal and local governments; metropolitan planning organizations; and certain nonprofits (or consortia of nonprofits) to carry out activities to mitigate heat in urban areas. HUD must coordinate with the Environmental Protection Agency on the program.

Bill 117 hr 7534, also known as the Excess Urban Heat Mitigation Act of 2022, aims to address the growing issue of urban heat islands in cities across the United States. Urban heat islands are areas where temperatures are significantly higher than surrounding rural areas due to human activities such as the construction of buildings and roads, as well as the lack of green spaces.

The bill proposes several measures to mitigate the effects of urban heat islands, including the establishment of a grant program to fund projects that reduce heat in urban areas. These projects could include the planting of trees, the installation of green roofs, and the creation of cool pavements.

Additionally, the bill calls for the development of a national strategy to address urban heat islands, which would involve collaboration between federal, state, and local governments, as well as community organizations and businesses. This strategy would aim to increase awareness of the issue, improve data collection and monitoring, and promote the use of heat-reducing technologies. Overall, the Excess Urban Heat Mitigation Act of 2022 seeks to protect the health and well-being of residents in urban areas by addressing the impacts of rising temperatures. By implementing measures to reduce heat in cities, the bill aims to create more livable and sustainable urban environments for all Americans.
