No Retaining Every Gun In a System That Restricts Your Rights Act

This bill modifies the retention requirements for firearm transaction records of federal firearms licensees (FFLs) that go out of business.

Current law generally requires FFLs that go out of business to deliver their firearm transaction records to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

This bill removes the requirement for FFLs that go out of business to deliver their firearm transaction records to the ATF. Further, the bill requires the ATF to destroy all out-of-business records it has collected from FFLs.

Bill 117 HR 6945, also known as the No Retaining Every Gun In a System That Restricts Your Rights Act, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to address concerns about the retention of personal information related to gun ownership in a system that may infringe upon individuals' Second Amendment rights.

The bill aims to prohibit any federal agency or entity from retaining records of firearms purchases or transfers for longer than 24 hours after the completion of a background check. This provision is intended to ensure that individuals' information is not stored indefinitely in a database that could potentially be used to track or monitor gun owners.

Additionally, the bill includes measures to strengthen the privacy protections of gun owners by requiring that any records of firearms transactions be destroyed within the specified time frame and prohibiting the sharing of this information with any other government agency or entity. Supporters of the bill argue that it is necessary to safeguard the privacy and Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners, while opponents may raise concerns about the potential impact on law enforcement efforts to track illegal firearms. Overall, Bill 117 HR 6945 seeks to strike a balance between protecting individual rights and ensuring public safety, and its fate will ultimately be determined by the deliberations and decisions of the US Congress.
