Respecting the Rights of Organ Donor Recipients Act of 2022

This bill prohibits limiting access to organ transplants based on an individual's COVID-19 vaccination status.

Specifically, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network may not (1) request an individual's COVID-19 vaccination status when considering whether to place the individual on an organ transplant waitlist, or (2) require the vaccination in order for an individual to receive an organ transplant. This network is a public-private partnership that links organizations (e.g., transplantation centers and laboratories) in the organ donation and transplantation system.

Bill 117 HR 6540, also known as the Respecting the Rights of Organ Donor Recipients Act of 2022, aims to protect the rights of individuals who have received organ transplants. The bill seeks to ensure that organ donor recipients have access to necessary medical care and support services, as well as protection from discrimination based on their status as organ transplant recipients.

The bill includes provisions that require health insurance companies to cover the costs of post-transplant medications and follow-up care for organ donor recipients. It also prohibits discrimination against organ donor recipients in employment, housing, and other areas based on their status as transplant recipients.

Additionally, the bill establishes a national registry of organ donor recipients to track outcomes and ensure that recipients are receiving appropriate care. The registry will also help to identify trends and areas for improvement in the organ transplant system. Overall, the Respecting the Rights of Organ Donor Recipients Act of 2022 aims to ensure that organ donor recipients receive the support and protection they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives after receiving a life-saving transplant.
