5/11/2023, 3:45 PM

Coastal and Ocean Acidification Stressors and Threats Research Act of 2021 or the COAST Research Act of 2021

This bill addresses the effects of ocean and coastal acidification on marine organisms and ecosystems. Specifically, the bill reauthorizes through FY2026 and revises the Ocean Acidification Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the ocean acidification grant program of the National Science Foundation. The bill expands those programs, as well as the ocean acidification activities of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to include efforts to research and monitor the effects of coastal acidification.

The COAST Research Act of 2021, also known as Bill 117 hr 1447, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to authorize funding for research and development related to coastal and ocean acidification.

The bill aims to address the growing concern over the impact of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems and coastal communities. It seeks to support research efforts that will help scientists better understand the causes and effects of ocean acidification, as well as develop strategies to mitigate its harmful effects.

If passed, the COAST Research Act of 2021 would allocate funding to federal agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support research projects focused on ocean acidification. This funding would be used to support research on topics such as the impact of ocean acidification on marine life, coastal communities, and the economy. Overall, the COAST Research Act of 2021 aims to promote scientific research and innovation in the field of ocean acidification, with the goal of better understanding and addressing this pressing environmental issue.
